Exotic Ciphers in Destiny 2 & How to Get Old Exotics from Previous Seasons

Spend the Exotic Cipher on an older Exotic at Rahool.

Bungie introduced Exotic Ciphers as a new currency in Destiny 2: Season of Arrivals. This currency can be used by new players to obtain Exotics that are currently unavailable in the game, while veterans can use it to increase their Xur rewards.

Here’s how to get an Exotic Cipher, as well as what weapons you can get and in what order you should get them.

CAN YOU TELL ME WHERE I CAN FIND AN EXOTIC CIPHER?

The Exotic Cipher is a unique currency with only one known source: the Season Pass. Players can get an Exotic Cipher at level 55 in the Season of Arrivals Season Pass – it’s available on the free track, meaning all Destiny 2 players get one.

Players can only hold one Exotic Cipher at a time, according to the tooltip. If you don’t have all five Exotics, it appears like you’ll have to play five seasons to earn them all.

It’s worth mentioning that more Exotic Ciphers sources may emerge in the future, but for now, we just have the one-per-season option.

BUYING OLD WEAPONS WITH YOUR EXOTIC CIPHER

The Exotic Cipher’s main purpose is to assist new players in obtaining retired weapons. Take an Exotic Cipher, 100,000 Glimmer, three Enhancement Prisms, and numerous planetary relics and combine them with an Exotic Cipher,to the Tower’s Cryptarch, Master Rahool.

Rahool’s menu includes Exotics from Seasons of the Undying and Dawn, and he’ll most likely get Exotics from Season of the Worthy this fall. Eriana’s Vow, Leviathan’s Breath, Devil’s Ruin, Symmetry, and Bastion are all available during Season of Arrivals.

However, some of these Exotics are far superior to others, and because this is such a rare resource, you want to make sure you get it right. Here are some of our top picks for Exotics to start with:

  1. Eriana’s Promise (useful in Nightfalls, all activities with Champions, PvP)
  2. The Ruin of the Devil (useful in activities with Champions, fun and powerful)
  3. a stronghold (useful in PvP)
  4. Symmetry is an important concept (useful for patrol activities and strikes)
  5. The Breath of Leviathan (useful for nothing, a currently very weak Exotic)

WHAT IF I ALREADY HAVE EXOTICS FROM THOSE SEASONS?

You can use your Exotic Cipher at Xur if you already have those five Exotics. Xur will sell you an Exotic Engram for 97 Legendary Shards once a week. If your collection is complete, this Exotic will normally drop an Exotic you don’t have or a random Exotic armour piece.

You can normally only purchase one of these per week, but you can use your Exotic Cipher to get a second from Xur. If you haven’t collected all of the Exotics yet, this is an excellent method to do so.

If you currently have all of the Exotics, we recommend waiting until the fall to get your second Exotic Engram from Xur. Like Forsaken in 2018, Beyond Light is likely to introduce more armour and weapon Exotics to the random drop pool. If you wait until the fall to use your Exotic Cipher, you’ll be able to get two new Exotics relatively instantly.
